We’re A Happy Red Family

It’s no secret that Liverpool FC are going through hard times at the moment. The H&G controversy has been in our heads for months now, and our Reds are a far cry from the team they have been in recent years, with the number of fans  unwilling to support Rafa Benitez increasing from day to day.

Somehow I can understand those fans and people complaining about the current situation and the not so good games we have had and may still have to watch this season. To be honest, some 90min out on the field were simply $%!%. But on the other hand … what are we complaining about?

I was 11 years old when I watched football on TV with my dad back in 1998. It was the 29 November, a normal league game: Liverpool FC vs. Blackburn Rovers. I loved the kits, the way they played and the chants the fans were singing. And when a young player called Steven Gerrard was sent on for the last minutes, I knew, “This is my club!”

Nearly everyone in my family always supported FC Bayern Munich – quite logical when you live only 30min away from the city, don’t you think? – And even though I had a season ticket, kits and all the other funny (and not always useful) stuff that makes a fan I always knew this was not the club I was meant to support. Their club colours include red too but it was the wrong red.

So from that November day, the only club on my mind was LFC. For years the club was more important than most things surrounding me - school, hobbies, friends etc. included. These days the Reds pretty much rule my life but in another way.

Maybe it replaced every “idol” I ever had and gained some new family members too, true to the motto “It’s not a badge, it’s a family crest”. We all know that’s not just a phrase, don’t we? Would almost wear a Manc shirt if not true, that’s how convinced I am that at least 90% of you feel the same.

Yes, we have been through hard days and months several times in our club’s history; sometimes quite a few people – including me – thought it couldn’t get any worse. Although I was only two years of age back then a shiver runs down my spine hearing the “Anfield Rap” nowadays – and intense joy is not the reason! That was a low point in LFC history for sure ;-) …  Against all odds we always managed to get back on our feet, the Champions League Final 2005 is probably the best example.

Maybe there is no reason to complain – speaking about the football only(!). In my opinion we’re not even close to a footie crisis. We’re not at the bottom of the league table, there’s still the chance of us finishing this season in 4th place. There are other teams in Premier League, or football in general, who’d do everything to get to the top five, possibly even would sign Gary N*ville. No really, they would!

We have some outstanding football legends and great talents (Johnson for example) playing for our club. If they manage to work together I expect them to get even better next season and lead us – together with our captain and Rafa – to the Premier League title. 2010/11 maybe? I’ll be ready! It’s not the last season ever being played this year, there’s always the next one.

And even if we finish this season on 6th I still would be proud of our team and support them, no matter what. We all should! It’s not just the fans (or the club) who’ll never walk alone, but the players also. No one on this planet is on top of his form in his job every day, every minute, every second.

Watching Gerrard or Carragher, who have been great for over a decade, still able to perform and be high-class in almost every game, it just excites me whenever they’re in the line-up. Writing this makes me ridiculously impatient for Thursday’s Quarter Final in Europa League. Support, encouragement and the true love of us – the fans – is what they need now the most. Fortunately, most of us show it and for that reason I love being a part of that family!

So true, unbelievable when you're up there how families are split between Red & Blue but still go together. I realised when living in Liverpool how important LFC is to this city.

As an avid Liverpool supporter, I really enjoyed reading your article. I remember standing on the Kop-end of the ground for the first time with my then young son Ro; it was like the birth of a whole new family - that is what Liverpool Football Club and the loyal fans are about.
Thank you for this lovely article x

I thought this was great ... and to think Davina was worried abut being a first time poster! Passion comes through, and it really makes a lot of sense.

I grew up a Liverpool fan, and what you say is so true. Days at Anfield are so special, you really feel part of something. Somehow, whatever happens, the people around the club bond stronger together. I loved reading this. Thank You x
