The Six Nations … The Girlie Perspective!

[show_avatar email=jessicapayne3283@aol.com align=left] Ladies, this is my favourite week of the year. It’s not that I turn 27 tomorrow, although boys take note, champagne, strawberries and chocolate go along way towards impressing this girl. Shallow? Moi? I will of course settle for a Babycham, an apple and a Snickers bar!

Now girls, if pretty boys and cute faces are your thing, turn off the screens for the next 6 weeks.

If you like a proper, rugged man, this weekend signals the start of the annual paradise otherwise known as the Six Nations, or to me and my mates, the ‘bum-stival’! Tight bums in tighter shorts and masculine frames, I already shudder at the thought!

An afternoon in the pub watching the rugby is quite an event. The boys are overcome with tribal instinct, consuming hitherto uninvented concoctions of alcohol, singing silly but quite funnily rude songs (don’t encourage them though!), and finding it impossible to sit still in one seat for more than a second.

It is absolutely different from watching the footie as rugby truly is the “gentlemans’ sport”, where win or lose, you share a pint of whatever it may be at the end, as opposed to swearing handbags at 6 paces, and having a scrap!

The secret for the girls is to sit quietly, pretend that you have no idea what’s going on (many of us don’t!), watch your boys get increasingly incoherent, and look intently to the screen at the apex of masculinity before you! If all goes well, your eyes will be full, you’ll get through a bottle of wine (if grapes are your thing!), and probably be treated to a horribly overcooked Double Burger by your male company!

Believe me, it really works! And if England win, you are unlikely to pay for a drink all night as the boys buy rounds which get more exotic by the minute! The Ed. seems to specialise in Jagerbomb.

Quite frankly, I know very little of the technicalities of Rugby Union! This is despite the likes of the Ed. and his mates dragging me to the pub every weekend for 8 years! However, I know just about enough to get by, which basically means a combination of cheering and drooling at appropriate times! I’ve picked out some of my predictions for this year’s tournament:-

  1. My friend Brianna will pass out within at least 10 minutes of the start of the tournament, mainly due to the sight of Jonny Wilkinson in England‘s first match. (Boys, she’s hot and newly single, so resuscitation should be a pleasure!)
  2. My friend Kate, will spend the whole of the day asking why Gavin Henson doesn’t play anymore, and also why half of the Wales ‘Fat Row Forward Lines’ (Ed. tells me it’s just called the Front Row) look like Metallica
  3. My friend Oonagh will wonder why we English call Paul O’Connell, ‘Ginger’. According to her, the strapping man from Ireland is Strawberry Blonde!
  4. My friend Catriona will be telling everyone about her Delhi Mug (again, Ed. tells me it’s called a Calcutta Cup, though can’t see the difference myself) Apparently, Scotland will get it for beating England. Yeah right!!
  5. My friend Isabelle will be drooling positively about Sébastien Chabal … oh girls, now this is a man, a whole lot of mountainous hunk! Unfortunately, she thinks he is the only good one in the France team.
  6. My friend Melania will be wondering what it’s all about and why are Italy playing with oddballs.

A practical ‘Girl’s Guide to Rugby’ can be found at Bookshelf Boyfriend. For now, I hope my guide works! And remember, the Grand Slam is not a cocktail or wrestling move. And most importantly, when they sing ‘Swing Low‘, they are singing about the rugby and not … …

Anyway, enjoy the spectacle and embrace ‘it’ with passion!
