The Nutshell, 2009

Posted on December 30th, 2009 | by Rohan |

I was chatting with my old boss Louise yesterday, she had endured a difficult year which has ended very happily. She, as many, would expect me to describe this year as the most horrible of my life.

Believe it or not, it is simply not the case. Whilst losing Danielle will always be amongst the darkest times, there have been too many fabulous occasions which in time will be recalled very fondly.

  • Promotion at work, and the incredible support that I have received from the organisation in recent weeks
  • The Girl of my dreams agreeing to marry me

  • The opportunity to meet some wonderful new friends – take a bow Messrs Jay, MacLennan & Morfitt, Rocks
  • Being reunited with the dearest of old friends – Messrs Hollis & Jones as well as the Family Ranchhod, not to mention the ‘Hagley Girls’ thanks
  • The unstinting loyalty of those friends who were already there

  • Living and sharing my life with my gorgeous Danielle
  • The day at Twickenham when Moseley RFC won the EDF Challenge Trophy

Already, the above are enough to allow me to remember the many high points of this year – not mentioned above are the many special days / events spent with those mentioned above, and particularly the strength and comfort that friendship has given me in my grief.

Yes, the year will always be remembered with a tinge of sadness – and yes, I understand that this is probably an understatement. However, pain and sorrow is individual and relative.

My pain is no greater than those families who have lost people in our wonderful Armed Services, of those who have struggled to put food on the table having lost jobs in the recession, and of those who starve in underprivileged parts of the world.

Lest we remember, people suffer heartache and joy of all types everywhere and every day. Love your family and friends, respect all including yourself, and neither rejoice to all in joy, or be a martyr in sorrow.  I have a profound belief that following these maxims will help me to be a better and happier person.

As 2009 is ready to pass, I wish you all every joy and happiness for 2010.
